What are we each entitled to in our divorce settlement?

What does the law say about how to split the house, how to share pensions and other assets, and how much maintenance is payable.

What steps can we take to reach a fair agreement?

The four basic steps to reaching an agreement on divorce finances are: disclosure, getting advice, negotiating and implementing a Consent Order.

What is a Consent Order and why do we need one?

A Consent Order is a legally binding document that finalises a divorcing couple's agreement on property, pensions and other assets.

Please I need an advice, I applied to the court for financial remedy on the 4th of Feb, I received hearing date and letters with all key dates, 1st hearing is scheduled for 2nd of May. However, I received another court letter that my ex also applied for financial remedy on the 7th of February, hearing date is scheduled for 2nd of June. I prefer the hearing for the 2nd of May and i don't want to be attending 2 different hearings in 2 different courts for the same case. I have written to the court but no response yet. Please how can i request for the second case my ex applied to be cancelled since the first hearing will serve the same purpose. He wasn't aware i made the 1st application but his lawyer should have received papers by now but hasn't made any contact. Thanks

Write again to the second court with proof (letters from the first court) to let then know that the case is already being held in another court. Inform his solicitor of the same. If you get no response in the meantime - inform the judge at the first hearing and he will clear it up. You will not have to attend both hearings - there can only be one financial remedy proceeding and the second one will be cancelled sooner or later.
