What are we each entitled to in our divorce settlement?

What does the law say about how to split the house, how to share pensions and other assets, and how much maintenance is payable.

What steps can we take to reach a fair agreement?

The four basic steps to reaching an agreement on divorce finances are: disclosure, getting advice, negotiating and implementing a Consent Order.

What is a Consent Order and why do we need one?

A Consent Order is a legally binding document that finalises a divorcing couple's agreement on property, pensions and other assets.

UC will stop until your capital falls below the permitted level.

Depending on how long since you lived in house that you are selling you might get a 26 week period in which to buy another house with it.

Another option if you cannot buy a house is to put it all in a pension fund. However, you won't have access to the money for many years without significant tax penalties.

Maximum you will be able to pay into a pension, including tax relief, will be your earnings for the year up to a maximum of £60k or if no earnings £2880.
