What are we each entitled to in our divorce settlement?

What does the law say about how to split the house, how to share pensions and other assets, and how much maintenance is payable.

What steps can we take to reach a fair agreement?

The four basic steps to reaching an agreement on divorce finances are: disclosure, getting advice, negotiating and implementing a Consent Order.

What is a Consent Order and why do we need one?

A Consent Order is a legally binding document that finalises a divorcing couple's agreement on property, pensions and other assets.

Hi, hope someone can shed some light on this matter. Married 20 years, wife applied for divorce in January and currently going through financial mediation. I am on an average wage in UK and partner is on a lower income due to working 3 days a week. We have a 14 and 8 year old. Due to divorce proceedings, my stress levels have shot through the roof as i am the main bread winner and i pay for all household bills and the mortgage (done so since we got married). Her contribution according to her is looking after the children. With myself being signed off on stress leave, and her not willing to help contribute towards any bills or mortgage, is there anything i can do to get her to contribute (BTW we are only communicating by email even though under the same roof)? I am worried that missing payments will mean bad credit and will have a major impact in the future for both of us.

Not much you can do to force her to pay short term especially given the status quo that these were bills you have always covered.

What is her earnings spent on?

A 14 and 8 year old won't require the amount of care that prevents her working full time. What are her plans for this as she will be expected to maximise her income?

What are the housing plans long term?

Are you claiming all benefits you are entitled to?
