What are we each entitled to in our divorce settlement?

What does the law say about how to split the house, how to share pensions and other assets, and how much maintenance is payable.

What steps can we take to reach a fair agreement?

The four basic steps to reaching an agreement on divorce finances are: disclosure, getting advice, negotiating and implementing a Consent Order.

What is a Consent Order and why do we need one?

A Consent Order is a legally binding document that finalises a divorcing couple's agreement on property, pensions and other assets.

Strange that. Last week on a different thread I was having a go at ex's solicitor's unproffessional conduct and general incompetance that was forcing up my expenses, not to mention the ex's that would be deducted from the final settlement.
One person, presumabley a solicitor sought to have a go at me for daring to say that some solicitors rack up their costs to feather their own nest.

Well i can confirm that i have well and truly been stuffed by my ex's counsel - their get out of clause is that they were only acting on instructions but surely they have a duty to respond within the allocted time frames.

My costs escalated because of this and the papertrail proves this beyond a shadow of a doubt..

Sorry to hear that you had the same experience as me...

I telephoned my solicitor in a right old state initially when I thought I'd need an occupation order. My stbx left and I proceeded with the solicitor on Legal Aid.

However, I lost my Legal Aid certificate when I went back to work earning 5k per annum. Again, I was in a right old panic but my solicitor said he'd carry on with the case and charge Legal Aid rates of £64 an hour, £6.84 for letters and emails etc. I have paid 2,500 so far amd have been quoted 3,000 to go to FH. I pay £250 a month as I cannot afford more than this. I have received an excellent service. My emails are always answered within a few hours max. and I have very often received updates/emails etc on a SUNDAY!!!!!

My experience has been really positive. I'm on a very low income with two kids and one hell of a stbx but I am treated exactly the same as the clients who are paying normal fees.I know I have been really lucky
