What are we each entitled to in our divorce settlement?

What does the law say about how to split the house, how to share pensions and other assets, and how much maintenance is payable.

What steps can we take to reach a fair agreement?

The four basic steps to reaching an agreement on divorce finances are: disclosure, getting advice, negotiating and implementing a Consent Order.

What is a Consent Order and why do we need one?

A Consent Order is a legally binding document that finalises a divorcing couple's agreement on property, pensions and other assets.

What do you want them to do? Is it something you could be doing yourself? Divorce is stressful enough without having to be worried about whether your sol is doing their job properly.

I have not self-repped but am beginning to wish I had!!
I think you can always start off on your own and call in legal help later.

And don't forget we're all always ready to chip in with support and advice here.

Hello-
well at the moment i am feeling the same aout my sol and realise i spent £6000 within two years for a divorce which i could have done myself.I self repped last month( my ex had a barrister to represent him)
and actually if you can manage your emotions, i encourage you to do so.It is great being abe to voice all your concerns/ expectations directly! You will feel great, especially in a situation wher a sol is taking too long...
so read abit about law and rights, and write things down.I did it, and I would encourage you to do it too. Sols can be a waste of time, and it is sometimes so worrying...
i have done my divorce and would be pleased to assist you- please do not hesiatate to contact me for further info/ help/ practical stuff
Be positive, strong and clear!

...if it's any consolation: I'm self-repping because I can't get Legal Aid (brick rich - cash poor!) However, I've been using a solicitor on a consultancy basis, and even when paying £235.00 per hour, she still rarely bothers to get back to me unless I'm chasing.

OMG Dani-Cali- I so feel the same

It's nearly a year since my ex left and I'm on legal aid even though he's a high earner

Rang legal aid( I make a 50 pound contribution each month) and they said I could not change sols unless I went through the formal complaint procedure with them

Is this right?

Got my first financial court hearing on 24 june, but my ex has an expensive solicitor and just playing the system- taking the p**s out of me

Haven't got a clue what road we're going down with the divorce

Has reduced me to a wreck, and she has the cheek, when I get to speak to her, to say "I'm not coping"!!!

She really isn't helping
