What are we each entitled to in our divorce settlement?

What does the law say about how to split the house, how to share pensions and other assets, and how much maintenance is payable.

What steps can we take to reach a fair agreement?

The four basic steps to reaching an agreement on divorce finances are: disclosure, getting advice, negotiating and implementing a Consent Order.

What is a Consent Order and why do we need one?

A Consent Order is a legally binding document that finalises a divorcing couple's agreement on property, pensions and other assets.

I can't make recommendations, but many solicitors will give you a free half-hour of advice. You could prepare a list of questions (after having read all the guides on this site) to save time, then find local sols who will offer free 30 mins and see all of them and see which ones you like the look of.

You are taking the first step, it's a long journey, but you are on your way.

Control freaks feel the need to control because they are afraid at heart. You are much stronger than you know - believe me.
