Hi,

I hope someone can help me. We are close to agreeing a lump sum payout with me getting £160,000 it may just be able to rehouse me and the children however I have not found anything else to buy so may need to rent.

I am currently receiving child tax credits, disability allowance, unemployment benefits - will I loose these if I have a lump sum payment, although I will need this to purchase another house?

Hi
Yes you will lose your benefits. I think any savings over £16,000 affect your entitlements. However if you can prove you are going to purchase a house you may be given a period of time to still claim benefits and have the money in the bank whilst you are purchasing a house. When I looked into this I was told I could get 6 months grace or possibly 12 at a push. I spoke to my local council who had all the legislation regarding this scenario.

Hope this helps
