Hi
I am on income support and DLA can I buy a home with my divorce settlement as I am renting at the moment and will I be penalised for doing so, or is it classed as a needed item?
I have asked for the settlement solely to give me some security as I am unable to work. My soon to be ex owns 2 properties outright and I have had to go on benefits since I left him.
I just don''t know where I stand at all.......
Please help

As far as I know, capital is not counted against you if it is invested in a home for yourself. I''m pretty certain about this, but as with all benefits it would be adviseable to check with a CAB as benefits do change every so often.

it is some years since I went through this but yes, my experience was the same as LittleMrMikes - I had to show documentation reagarding the sale of the previous house and the divorce and how the shortfall was being paid, but it didn''t cause any issues for me at all. I beleive that there is a 6 month grace period - so you might want to check that out as well if any kind of delay is likely.
