My children are now too old to qualify for support (19 and 20), but what happens to the £5500 arrears still owing? Ex is self-employed and has a charge against his house for some of the debt but not all of it.

Hi was child maintenance being paid via the CSA assessment or court/consent? Or was it a family arrangement? If it was by CSA assessment were the CSA collecting the money due or was he paying you direct?

It was a CSA assessement and they were collecting the payments.

Have you called the CSA? I would have thought the recovery of any outstanding amounts when the children qualifed for maintenance is now an issue for them to deal with. I can''t understand why they are not doing so already. Give them a call and start pushing them, they already have the facts and figures.

He''s supposed to be paying the arrears weekly but hasn''t. Their attitude is if he can''t pay there''s not a lot they can do...even if he does pay I will have grandchildren before the whole lots paid off! You would expect a time limit of some sort...

With the CSA you need to keep pushing. Go online fill in a complaint form, I got a very quick response when I took this action. I do admit my issues are still not resolved but I ring them every few days to keep the pressure up. When an ex is self employed it is more difficult I know, but I believe they have the power to deduct from bank accounts too. Good Luck

As a general rule, your ex-partner is still expected to pay the arrears. The CSA do have powers to chase him for the arrears and take enforcement action, in some cases they can reposes his property or have him committed to prison.

If you remain unsatisfied, then contact the CSA explaining that you want them to progress with chasing the arrears on your behalf.
