Young people of that age often need a reason to be angry with a parent and want nothing more to do with them.

He could always try explaining that in order for them and their mother their mother to stay in the house at the time he lent her the money long term to facilitate it.

She was probably too young to be angry at the time if the divorce so she is expressing it now.
