Hello,

I have a very complicated situation. My ex partner and I had a child in UK in 2008. I moved to Turkey with the child and my ex lives in Switchzerland now. I am Turkish and he is Dutch. He has not been in touch with us for the past 4 years now. Could I take him to court in UK for child maintenance? How much would that cost? Child has got his fathers surname as per the UK birth certificate.

Hello Belgin

As you live in Turkey, you are outside the jurisdiction of the United Kingdom’s (UK) child maintenance services and the UK legal system. Any court action you arrange would have to be started in Turkey.

Another option available to you is the family-based arrangement which is an agreement between parents without the involvement of government or legal systems. If you have trouble contacting your ex-partner, you could try using friends or family members to negotiate on your behalf or you could try contacting him via social media.

Regards

William
