My wife and I have been married for almost 2 years. I thought everything was going well until a few weeks ago when she told me that she wants a divorce. She told me that there is nobody else involved, we've never argued, she still wants to be friends and I can't quite work out what her reasons are. All she has said is that she isn't in love with me and wants out.
We have no children. The mortgage is in my sole name due to her credit history and all of the mortgage payments have come from my sole bank account (we have never had a joint bank account). I also pay for all of the other bills except the phone bill, electricity and gas (although she has got into debt on these too!)
Last year, we took out a joint secured personal loan on the house, and with the credit crisis, the value of the mortgage and the secured loan are more than the house is worth. We are in negative equity to the tune of about £20k. The loan was used to buy a caravan and to pay of some debts for both of us.
Since she could not rent anywhere due to her credit history, and the fact that she only earns minimum wage and then only 3 days per week, my wife was going to 'rent' a room in the
marital home and pay me £200 per month as rent. I was in agreement to this as I cannot really afford to live there on my own.
In addition to this, she was going to pay the gas, electricity and phone bills. I was going to pay everything else; council tax, Sky TV, water rates, mortgage and joint secured loan.
She has since told me that she will not be renting a room and wants to live elsewhere. Basically, she wants to walk away from everything, including her 50% liability of the joint secured loan (her liability should equate to about £11k).
I am going to be left with everything, and basically, cannot afford to continue living there. I can't sell the house and move back with my parents because of the negative equity. What can I do ?
