Alternative maintenance payments

The 'bottom line' at the foot of the results page gives two possible maintenance payments per month. One 'based on outgoings' and the other 'based on household/childcare costs'. In my case the first is invariably (scarily) higher than the second. Under what circumstances would the two payments apply in practice?

They are different calculations of the same thing - so to avoid any confusion - only one of them need to be paid.

The first is in theory the more accurate/appropriate because it is based on more real data (outgoings).

The second is there so people who do not have outgoings data to hand can get a guesstimate of the payments due.

Remember this maintenance is Spousal Maintenance and is not applicable in all cases (usually only applies where one party earns a lot more than the other).


If the first calculation is much higher than the second it suggests that your ex's outgoings are relatively high verses yours (taing into account kids) and perhaps too high - is this cos she is staying in FMH with a high mortgage?

The 'outgoings' maintenance result in my case is basically my take home minus my monthly living costs - leaving no spare cash whatsoever. The maintenance figure is pretty much enough to cover all my other half's outgoings - leaving all of her income (~£1350 of salary and benefits) untouched to do with as she pleases.

Not 'fair' surely?
