Hello,
I am just entering what for me is the totally unknown world of divorce procedings. I have had several free initial interviews with divorce solicitors so I think I know what to mexpect and in what order, and have agreed with the wife how we will carve up the estate financially and how we will care for the kids. Easy, eh?
Now it comes to actually applying for the divorce etc and am scared witless by the costs put forward by the solicitors, even for a non-contested and agreed divorce like mine.
Is there anyone out there who can recommend a cheap DIY divorce method please?
Many thanks,
Neil

Hi

There are lots of adverts for divorce help but if its going to be a simple affair then why not DIY?

My partner purchased the set from WH Smith for £15 which gives you advice, which quite frankly you can get off here or from the court for free. There is a lot of help and guidance on here.

Basic costs we have encountered so far are,

Basic guidance CD, forms and advice booklet £15 (although ALL of the forms you need are available free to download or from the court themselves.
Copy of his marraige certificate £10.50
Sending to court the initial application and statement of arrangements for kids £300.

I think there is another cost for applying for the absolute but as far as I know thats it. Total for less than £400.

If you are confident you and your STBX are going to be able to keep things ammicable you definitely can do things much cheaper. But if you think things may get messy then there is no substitute for proper legal advice. Still nothing to say you can't just use a sol for advice only though, rather than paying them to actually handle the whole thing.

Good luck.

I have just completed DIY through to absolute. It takes some research to understand the steps required but if you are willing to put in the time virtually everything you need is on this site. The only thing I used a solicitor for was the drafting of the Consent Order.

I paid all the court fees to keep things simple and I needed to pay extra for baliff presentation of the papers when my ex refused to sign the acknowledgement but apart from that there was nothing too difficult to deal with. It was made easer by making sure we had agreed an outline of the financial settlement before I left.

Hope this helps.

Alan
