Could someone please advise me. I have petitioned for divorce, I am receiving Income Support, have 2 children ages 4 and 5. My solicitor has said that Legal Aid will only cover financial matters worth over £10,000. Is this correct? My solicitor has said that I have to write my own letters to my estranged husband's solicitor regarding the financial matters i.e. he sold our matrimonial car and retained the proceeds, he has also retained some money, an iphone4 belonging to myself which I understand again he has sold and other odds and ends that dont really amount to thousands of pounds, but when you are reliant on Income Support and he is always late paying CSA, then every penny counts. So back to my question, do I have to represent myself as I am on Legal Aid and dont have assets worth over £10K? Thanks for any advice

Have a go at this eligibilty calculator?
www.communitylegaladvice.org.uk/en/legalaid/
There's also a free advice helpline number on that website.

Is this what the solicitor meant:
"The calculator checks if you’re financially eligible for legal aid. Your case will also need to pass a test of merit to make sure it is worth taking to court. Your legal adviser will deal with this for you."

Hi Maggie

Thanks for your reply. I am in receipt of Legal Aid, but my solicitor has said he cannot write about financial issues under 10K as he has to justify this to Legal Aid. So although I am have a Legal Aid Certificate I do not understand why my solicitor cannot address these financial issues that I have. Thanks.
