I was awarded a pension share via court on divorce from ex husband who was in the fire Service. I had just stopped work due to cancer and was reliant on benefits. the house was repossessed..I am now nearing 60 live alone and in receipt of disability benefit income only living in rented house, the deferred pension is payable soon but if I take no lump sum not a great amount it would give me an income of less than 11000 per year and I will have benefits stopped and all help such as housing benefit so be far worse off , if I take lump sum and lesser monthly amount it takes me over the 6000 savings for benefit. No option to defer to leave in until retirement age either , what do I do ?

I think you should check which of your benefits are non means tested so would not be affected by the pension income.

Is the lump sum you are able to obtain going to be enough for you to buy a small property? If it is, I believe you have six months to do this before benefits are affected.

It may be worth talking to the pensions advice service to see if the pension is one that can be wholly converted to cash.

It is also probably worth making an appointment with your local CAB to review your benefits.
