Barristers – A barrister is a qualified legal professional that can represent you in court if you are referred to court if you are referred through a solicitor. You can use a ‘public accesses barrister’ without needing to be referred by a solicitor. A barrister can also advise you on your case and if they are authorised to conduct litigation, they can start legal proceedings on your behalf.
Barristers are different to solicitors as there are different rules they need to follow, and they have different training and qualifications as well.
Barristers usually have expertise in a certain field they practice in e.g. family law, criminal, commercial etc. A barrister will be able to give you advice on your case and identify strengths and weaknesses and will give you a ‘written opinion’ on your case.
Barristers will support your cases on your and your solicitor’s behalf. A barrister will present your case to the court and represent you.
