What are we each entitled to in our divorce settlement?

What does the law say about how to split the house, how to share pensions and other assets, and how much maintenance is payable.

What steps can we take to reach a fair agreement?

The four basic steps to reaching an agreement on divorce finances are: disclosure, getting advice, negotiating and implementing a Consent Order.

What is a Consent Order and why do we need one?

A Consent Order is a legally binding document that finalises a divorcing couple's agreement on property, pensions and other assets.

It is hard. I knew after about six months that it would never work out (after trying to get him to come back) and now I am very glad we are separated. I am getting stronger. I have almost nothing to do with him. I look forward to the day I finally get my Decree Absolute and start my independent life proper (I used to think I could not live without him).

AND YET I find the pull to do what he wants, not to annoy him etc incredibly strong. Over 20 years of being nothing but a wife and mother and barely any existence in my own right was not a good preparation for divorce, financial wranglings (he did all the finances), having to sell up, find a means of supporting myself and my children etc. I still have hiccups but I am delighted with my progress. You will be too. The fear of the unknown can be crippling, but I am living proof that you can get past it.

Lots of total strangers saw better than I could what was going on in my life. Everyone is telling you the same thing. It''s not that we have a vested interest in your getting divorced: it''s that we want to save you any more heartache than necessary.

Good luck.
