What are we each entitled to in our divorce settlement?

What does the law say about how to split the house, how to share pensions and other assets, and how much maintenance is payable.

What steps can we take to reach a fair agreement?

The four basic steps to reaching an agreement on divorce finances are: disclosure, getting advice, negotiating and implementing a Consent Order.

What is a Consent Order and why do we need one?

A Consent Order is a legally binding document that finalises a divorcing couple's agreement on property, pensions and other assets.

Thanks you guys. All good advice. I think the mediation with a solicitor is the way ahead. 1 fee and fewer letters.

Anyway Im well up for wine and supper - waiting

Can I suggest you consider going to a (non solicitor) mediator first and then having their 'product' checked by a solicitor. That would probably be your least expensive option.

One of the problems will be that not many mediators produce a Separation Agreement. (If you are already in proceedings, only solicitors are allowed to draw up a SA anyway.) Phone up mediators in your area, ask if they hold an initial free meeting, find out what they do and how they do it (see you separately or together etc.), what you get at the end of it (a simple memorandum or SA), and how much it will cost - and so on.

I hope it all works out well for you.
