A lot of personal financial information gets posted on the boards - sticking a location next to that information is simply asking for trouble from nefarious sorts.

We have to think of the safety of the membership here, hence we leave it to the membership to put whatever information they feel comfortable with into their profiles.

So when one clicks on the profile, one immediately sees that the member might live in England and Wales.
I find that pretty interesting. :)

I would imagine that as, divorce law is very different in Scotland than England/Wales, those seeking advice on Scottish law, would make this clear in any forum postings.

Im not sure where you are now going with this posting,.....

Hi

I suspect lots of us would like to know if there are any other wikians in our area as we would like to meet each other in real life. Nothing to do with dating for me but to do with finding friends who are going through a similar life experience. There is a lot of safety in chatting/posting here in totally anonymity so most might want only that, but others want face to face contact too.

I went to the essex meet a few weeks ago and found it really open and friendly like they are online, no-one had any other agendas as far as I could tell, and for those like me who just need to get out more again it was perfect and I'd like to do it more.

On wiki we tend to stick together in loose groups, those we like chatting to, replying to posts from etc. It would be great to find like-minded people who are close by - it wouldn't be likely amongst 25000 members if left to chance.

I was wondering if we could use a trusted third party, perhaps a senior poster on the site or an volunteer admin. They could collect peoples locations who are interested, and be informed of any others say within 50 miles or whatever.
Or some sort of opt-in software feature on the site that works out distances between members and can tell us who's in our area.

Worth developing?

The option to create a group is already in place here on wiki. If someone would care to switch it on!!!

Hi Alive

I guess I could create groups for different areas or even counties and ask for members to add themselves.
Perhaps Mr Wiki has a view - as we don't want to add too many groups and clutter the place up!
And the extra forums built in to those groups could be used to safely arrange meets, parties etc. Could we advertise them on the home/community page perhaps?

I'm not a google earth expert, just a fan, but is there anyway we can create a mashup with that to create a public map of wiki locations for those who choose to reveal their hometowns?
