My son is 16 and will be starting a modern apprenticeship course being paid £90 a week whilst also studying for 2 nvqs, will my ex still have to pay maintenaince, I will be losing all benefits, and not sure how i am going to manage. I will be asking my son for some money, but this will not compensate for what i will be loosing, and I cant say to him that he cannot do it.

Thanks

This depends upon whether the course is an "approved" programme led apprenticeship or a course provided by an employer as part of a job contract. With programme led apprenticeships you would be entitled to continue claiming CB and child support. A course provided by an employer as part of a job contract doesn't count as approved and there is no entitlement to CB so no entitlement to child support.

Hi

I'm having exactly the same problem. My daughter will be getting £95 on her apprenticeship (half of the 18 year old's minimum wage) but I will lose about £150 a week if my tax credits, child benefit and maintenance stop.

Tax credits have said I wont get anything because she receives the £95 but child benefit have said that if it is an allowance paid by the training provider and her contract is with them and not the 'employer' she is placed with, I should receive benefit. I've checked and she is paid by the training provider and also has the contract with them so I am hoping that I still get child benefit and that will, in turn, mean she gets to keep her maintenance too.

Will get back and let you know how I get on but this is an awful situation. While you're grateful for the help tax credits etc give you its a shock when it suddenly ends. Its also not fair that my daughter will be 'working' full time for half the minimum wage for her age yet I might not get help to support her while she's at home, she may well have to move out which would be a ridiculous situation.

There should be more information out there for parents. I have found it very difficult finding any :(

I do not see why a parent should not have to pay a penny for a childs up keep. Their wage is not alot on an apprenticeship,or if the child turns 18 or leaves education, nothing changes for the parent with care as in household bills for food, clothing etc.

My childs apprenticeship is with an employer, so I will not receive anything.

Hi again

Well, what a palarva! I rang cb with the info I mentioned above and the woman who took the call was quite rude and said I needed loads more information and that I was wrongly informed the first time and I probably wasnt entitled to benefit any more. I contacted the training provider and got as much info as I could but was getting pretty annoyed by now. I rang cb back and explained that I knew my claim would be ending but I had been asked to provide this info. Operative asked the same three questions as the very first one had and said I was still entitled to it!! I made him double check as I dont want to end up owing anything and he was sure.

I still lose about £90 in tax credits but as my daughter gets £95 it balances so am over the moon.

Hi, I'm new here so apologies if this is the wrong place or my question has been answered elsewhere.
My daughter turned 18 in Feb (2010), she started the 2nd year of her apprenticeship in Sept 2010 + earns £95 per week.
Her dad stopped paying maintainance (arranged by CSA) in Sept 2009.
Is this right?? ....or should I have challenged this/be challenging it now???
Thanks

Are you entitled to CB? The rules relating to over 16s are here;

www.hmrc.gov.uk/childbenefit/keep-up-to-...urther-education.htm

If you are in receipt of CB it is nearly always the case you will be entitled to claim child support. The law has changed so that now CB and CM in the circumstances outlined in the link above can be paid until the relevant "child" reaches 20 years of age. Unfortunately the change has been implemented for CB but as far as I'm aware not yet for CM. That means there is some confusion with regard to nineteen year olds.
