What are we each entitled to in our divorce settlement?

What does the law say about how to split the house, how to share pensions and other assets, and how much maintenance is payable.

What steps can we take to reach a fair agreement?

The four basic steps to reaching an agreement on divorce finances are: disclosure, getting advice, negotiating and implementing a Consent Order.

What is a Consent Order and why do we need one?

A Consent Order is a legally binding document that finalises a divorcing couple's agreement on property, pensions and other assets.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am now acting for myself and have until noon tomorrow to 'give additions to the instructions to the valuer you want included' we jointly own a farm and don't agree on how it should be split. I have no idea on what points I'm supposed to add? I rang the surveyor that will be carrying out the valuation and just asked for any point's people would usually raise and he wouldn't help me. If anyone has any ideas on the kind of points I should be including I'd be so grateful. Many thanks for your help.

Are they valuing the land and buildings separately? What about the business?
Is it a ' red book' valuation?
Have they been asked to consider if there are options for dividing and selling the farm - ie split off some land and/or buildings. Do they have any recommendations about the best bits to use to realise capital if appropriate.
Do you want the farm to remain viable?

Hmm. Was this a court deadline or one set by other other side's solicitor? You should get a draft joint letter of instruction to approve. You can ask for changes to that if appropriate.
Is there scope for follow up questions to be raised once the valuation has been done? Check the order (if it is court ordered). As you are paying half it is not unreasonable that the valuation report should meet your needs as well. It should assist you in working out a fair settlement.
