Does anyone know if I am able to double barrel our surname (without deedpoll as I don't have my ex husbands consent for the children) then 'drop' the bit of the name I don't want to be known by?

Thanks

You cannot change your children's surname unless you have their father's consent - assuming he has parental responsibility.

But you can change your own surname - and you don't need to do it by Deed Poll.

However, if you decide to change your name in any other way you will require a Deed Poll document as evidence that you have legally changed your name. Without a Deed Poll, most organisations will refuse to amend their records to show your new name, including passport, driving licence, banks, savings, credit cards etc

Hi.
I wrote a statement to say I was reverting back to my Maiden Name because of divorcing & used the Decree Nisi to support it.
I did driving licence first & that gave me photo ID with my new name, Then I was able to change bank stuff & everything else.

Thanks for your replies.

My main difficulty is changing the childrens names. It is at their request as they have a name that means that they get bullied. My ex won't agree full stop.

We will just have to live with it I suppose.

Thanks everyone.

Legally an adult can changed their name by assumption or deed poll, but deed poll is not necessary and is not a requirement. To change a child's name, either by assumption or deed poll requires the consent of the other parent or court order.
