I split up with my son's dad (we never married)when my son was 1 and we had an agreement for him to pay £20 a week (not a lot really). I remarried and he did pay it. He then took voluntary redundancy last year and has not found employment again so stopped the maintenance. He gets an industrial injuries pension which means he only has to pay £1.74 a week child maintance which he pays standing order. His pension was over £100 a week 8 years ago never mind his redundancy money and other benefits he will get.
I cant understand how a parent only has to pay £1.74 for a child. If i was out of work i would still have to pay for everything my child needs. I also cant understand how a parent can not feel ashamed at only paying £1.74 a week for his child. He does have contact with him and buys him dvds and games but does not help out with anything our son needs.
How can this be right and does anyone know of anything i can do to change this? I cant appeal to the csa ive tried that.
Its not just about the money its the value of his child and supporting him with things he needs. I have now separated from my husband (im not doing very well am i?) so i have to bring my son up by myself with £1.74 help.

I feel for you, I really do. My stbx stopped paying again so the CSA have now set up a deduction of earnings order and it only took them 2 days to do it. I can't praise them enough. I get £95 a week for my two children and as I only work part time, it's still a struggle but I can't imagine getting nothing like you do.
What a fantastic role model you are for your son. xx

Thanks to both of you its just so unfair that they get all the fun of the child when it suits them without taking any financial or practical responsibility. But at least I have my son who is my world and he is worth every penny i dont get!

I'm a mum off three aged 12, 7 and 3. Csa did a deductions of earnings order to the tune of £50 a week. The day after he recieved the letter he went off sick!! Has been off ever since now has to pay £5 a week!!! Still haven't recieved a penny even tho he currently flaunts the fact he works cash in hand!! He sees the kids when he feels like it altho not on a sunday as hes usually hungover from a big saturday night on the town.. Is not paying a penny towards the morgage, loans or debt.. What can i do???
