Child support is treated separately from contact. When children of separated families do badly it's often because there isn't enough money so financial support is one of the most important contributions a parent can make to their children's well being.

Under CSA rules since 2003 a new partner's income is not taken into account when making an assessment of new cases. However, the parent with care may apply for a variation if the non-resident parent seems to have a way of life associated with someone whose income is much higher than the income used to work out child maintenance. A new partner's income is taken into account for cases predating March 2003.
