I have been self employed and in order to qualify for legal aid, you first have to find a solicitor that will take you on and then fill in all of the paperwork... I got most of my accounts up together but every legal aid solicitor I found were not taking on new clients. (my wife walked into the first one she found and they sent me a letter within 24 hours)

When she dissapeared with the kids, i managed to get an appointment in Leamington Spa (40 miles away) but 6 weeks in advance.

I sold tools, my guitar and other bits and raised enough to get a few hours worth of advice, then took a week off work researching and then filled all papers in and went to court. got a hearing for later that week, i arrived alone, she had Barrister, Solicitor and a domestic violence charity with her. so all in all not very nice. I stopped work in October and finally got Employment support allowance in April at which point i got legal aid and was given a 2 month wait for a solicitor. Social services pushed it through quicker due to concerns for the childrens welfare with the mother and i was seen within a week.

Not sure why going bankrupt would help unless you owe money to someone.

Good that you seem to have legal aid now.

You can contact www.fnf.org.uk for advice on contact and if there is concern for the kids' welfare when with her.

Hang in there ....things will get better.

You have said there is no equity in your house.
It is good that the kids have a roof over their heads.
Your priority must be to sort yourself out now.
Ill health or not you should be able to hold down a minimum wage job that'll earn you a couple of hundred a week rather than £60.
Then you can get a room sorted in a house share, and a settled accomodation.
I know it is hard to lose everything but you have to now concentrate on looking after yourself, after you have sorted that then you will be able to look after the kids.
Forget about the divorce you have the basic fundamentals of living to sort out first and in reality unless you are a woman looking after kids there ain't no free hand outs for blokes. That's a FACT.You're on your own and have to make your own dough.
All the best
Pete
