Is my stbx legally obliged to help with childcare costs seeing as it allows him to work too, or is maintenance all he needs to pay? Bearing in mind he earns three times as much as I could, it seems unfair that I should have to pay all of the childcare fees.

Hi, if the kids are his, he pays a % of his net earnings depending on the number of kids.
15% for 1 20% for 2 and 25% for 3 or more.
This is IF he no longer lives with you.
If you can come to an agreement between you thats better, otherwise, CSA.

No would be the short answer.
Assuming you are the PWC and he is the NRP, you would also be able to claim working tax credits and also child benefit. These benefits should cover most if not all of the childcare costs.
