I was divorced some years ago and I payed maintenance to my ex wife up until Jan when my son reached 18 Years of age. This was agree in a Separation Agreement and i wrote to my ex stating this was to end and I would pay something to help my son through Uni although not anywhere near as much. He has not contacted me in 9 years and is using a solicitor to write to me stating that I still have to pay the full amount as in Sep. agreement and I am in arrears etc. I am under the impression that we should be arranging this out of lawyers and courts and have written to him explaining this and that the contract I had with his mother has ended although I can still help out to some extent. Any advice?

Where did you divorce and what were the exact terms of the separation agreement? In Scotland there is a general obligation for all parents to "aliment" their children in education or training until the age of 25.
