I am going through court for a financial order as part of my divorce. My step son is 19 and now at university. I am getting conflicting advice as to whether the court will get me to make payments or some sort of support for him?? His father is still about.

CM for over 18s isn''t certain and depends on whether the "child" is in education, their needs, their and their parent''s resources and obligations. The first call for child maintenance is the natural father. Has he paid CM until now? Depending on the nature and duration of their relationship a step parent might be called upon to pay maintenance for a step child when the natural father isn''t around and the step parent has maintained a child.

Also a ''child'' still in education need for a home base would be considered when sorting out finances.
