how long is a piece of string? depends on whether the NRP responds and how quickly...how many reminders need to be sent....whether or not the employer has to be invovled....how long it takes the employer to respond.....

Even with cases where everyone does what they should, I wouldn''g bank on receiving any money within 3 months of the application being made.

Shrimper in another post you mentioned you already pay CM - have you checked the CSA calculator to see how this compares to their recommendations?

www.cmoptions.org/en/calculator/calculator.asp

TBH I think the CSA would prefer people to come up with their own agreements, if you look at their website it actively encourages it, so if you are in the ball park figure of what the calc indicates - go from there.

Thanks WR,

I have already paid in excess of 10k in the last 12 months. It should be higher but not by that much. I bheleive she is being pushed in to it by her new partner, can''t prove it of course. Happiness is more important than money and i''m inna very happy place at present.

Hello,

Thanks for your post. I''m Sarah the child maintenance Options Consultant. Usually, the Child Support Agency CSA aim to start gathering information from the paying parent within four weeks of the application being received if the receiving parent can give the CSA contact details for the paying parent.

The CSA will aim to make an accurate decision on the application within 12 weeks, but in some cases this may take as long as 26 weeks. If the CSA don''t have the current contact details for the paying parent, they will trace them as quickly they can.

However, parents don''t have to use the CSA to arrange child maintenance and can reach an agreement between themselves. This kind of arrangement is called a family-based arrangement, which most parents are usually happier with. Although a family-based arrangement isn''t legally binding, they give you the flexibility to agree between you what counts as child maintenance, and to change your agreement as your children get older or your circumstances change.

For more information about family-based arrangements and access to useful tools and forms online you can visit www.cmoptions.org, or if you''d prefer a confidential chat you could call the Child Maintenance Options team on 0800 988 0988 (free from a landline).

We have a web application that you may find useful, it offers help and support to separating families. The link is: www.cmoptions.org/en/sortingoutseparation/index.asp
