Just a quick question about money. My stbx is an accountant and doesn’t want us to involve solicitors. He told me he would take care of me financially (we’re divorcing because I caught him cheating with one of his clients) and he told me it would be a straight forward 50/50 split re the equity in our house, savings and ISA. But the Divorce Calculator on here splits it 70/30. Is that likely to be correct? We have 2 kids (12 & 14) so does that change things? I didn’t think I could afford to stay in the family home but if I get 70% of assets rather than 50% then I think I can. I just don’t want to get my hopes up in case the calculator is wrong...

The calculator is a blunt instrument but it is quite right that, depending on circumstances, a capital settlement may depart from 50:50. The first consideration is needs and how they can be met with the means you have between you.
I would try to agree a settlement if you can but I certainly wouldn't do it without full financial disclosure and some sound external advice from a specialist. Have a good read through the information on this site and have a look at the low cost services we offer. Come back with any questions you have.
