Hi,

I am filing for divorce after a year of marriage and i was wondering whether online/DIY divorce is just as good as going to a high street solicitor. It is a straightforward divorce, no children e.t.c. so i would like it to cost as little as possible. Also, how long will the whole process take?

Thanks in advance for any comments.

If the divorce is uncontested and you are prepared to spend a little time doing research the divorce itself isn't that difficult to do yourself. You can download the D8 petition and guidance leaflets forms here;

The tricky bit is tying up the finances in a way that neither party can make future claims against each other. You will need a solicitor to at least draft a Consent Order tailored to your own circumstances, and I would suggest that it's a good idea to see a solicitor sooner rather than later to find out where you stand and what your options are even if you then decide to negotiate an agreement between yourselves or possibly with the help of a mediator.
