i want to buy my wife's half of the house. i have offered more than half the asking price by 10,000. she has agreed to this but insists that if i sell in the future she wants half of any extra profit she is living with a new partner who has his own property which is up for sale and they will buy a place together is she trying to shaft me or what

I don't think she is necessarily trying to shaft you; I think she is negotiating - but I suppose it depends on your definition of being shafted.

Obviously I don't know your situation or other aspects of your assets and settlement agreement.

However, for what it is worth, you could try one or a combination of the following:

1 Reject her offer outright.
2 Agree to her offer.
3 Agree, provided she agrees to pay her share of any reduction in value.
4 Agree, provided you pay her only 50% of the valuation and not the extra £10k.
5 Agree but only share any profit if the property is sold within a limited period - say two years.

You may find she prefers to have the extra £10k and no other conditions.
