I need some advice for an aquaintance who "thought he was divorced" from his Thai wife. I do not have all the details but his current fiancee who has just arrived on a fiancee visa from the Philippines was on the phone to my Filipina wife today in pieces as her and her partner had just come back from the registry office in Birmingham where his Thai divorce was not accepted by them. From what I know he was married in Thailand and took the lady to the UK. I do not know how long they were together but apparently they separated and she obtained a Thai divorce from him and the document she gave him was in Thai with an English translation and issued in London. Has he been fooled?. I have only recently met him and he seems quite a quiet and shy bloke and his new Fiancee is absolutely lovely girl. I know here through a FIL BRIT website when she was still in Manila and was using the site to get to know the Uk Pinoy community and asking questions about visas tec. She was always helpful to other girls and when I found out her partner lived close by to us I told her she could hook up with my better half and get to know the area.

Both of them are very upset and he is very worried that he may still be married. He needs some expert help to look at this document he has and tell him if it is valid or not.

Any help would be appreciated. I have not yet discussed this with them as they are still very shocked and do not know what to do

thank you in advance

I suggest he shows the document to a solicitor, but if the document wasn't accepted by the register office I guess its not right.

thank you, what I think he will neeed is someone from the Thai community preferably legally trained but I am going to put a call into the Thai embassy for what it is worth just to see if they can indeed issue divorces from the UK.

Not sure why you are doing the running around for him!

Are you saying this divorce was arranged in the UK under Thai law? Because it wouldn't have gone through a UK court. Not sure if embassies can do this sort of thing but would think it unlikely.
