Hi. The wife has just told me its all over. We've been married 12 years and have 2 school age kids. I expect she will look after the kids full time - or at best 6 days/week. I've jsut run the Divorce Calculator and based on my net income £6k and hers £1k it appears I have to pay maintenance of £3200 (based on outgoings data ??) and/or £2100 (based on household/childcare data??). I have no idea which number is relevant, but £3,200 seems like a lot of money out of my £6k. The calculator also suggests she gets 80% of the equity in the house - which is outrageous particularly as she is the one refusing to go to counselling etc.

Have I got the calculation wrong, and whats the difference between the two maintenance numbers?

Hiya Sam

I am just about to get beaten up lol!
I use this site because it is friendly, helpful and I have felt welcomed. There are some seriously good people on here.
When I first came on, I was under the happy illusion that I did not need any legal help and a solicitor would be the only winner were I to get one involved.
This site has scared me into getting one because it is very very confusing out there.
Don't rely on a website - no matter how good it is...
Go see someone - I discovered today that most solicitors will give the first consultation free.
Please understand this is NO slur on this site - just everyone's situation is different and you cannot generalise..

For example we have 2 grown up children who live at home... 1 in FTE and the other earning..
There is nowhere in that divorce calculator that takes that in to account and I am blowed if I am going to pay maintenance for 2 full grown adults.
I mentioned to my solicitor today that I had visited a divorce forum and she groaned! She then cited some cases where people had taken advice off such sites and got themselves into all sorts of trouble.
To be fair, this place is to provide advice..... please please go see a solicitor and stop frightening yourself.
Sorry lovely wiki admin... but I had to say it xxxx

Lucretia,
Thank you for your advice. I agree with it. I have already asked one of my legal contacts to put me in touch with a divorce lawyer for half an hour or so. Unfortunately, rather than waiting to see the lawyer in a few days time, I went crusing on the net and found the wiki site with its calculator - and started filling it in as you do - big mistake! You're right the issue is too complex to be addressed in or 5 questions.

As for the site, I agree it really does seem friendly and it seems like everyone wants to be helpful because they know from personal experience what people are going through.
