I was divorced 1997. With neg-equity & £7,000 bills arrears. Ex diserted & abandoned the property. Leaving me to pick up the financial pieces on my own. Now,Nov 2008 Ex wants the property sold.To claim half of value. I have just found out about the term Ring-Fencing. What can I do in order to keep the property. Can anything be done by using this ring-fencing term? I am desperate for help !!!

Hi Luwiki. Ringfencing is a generic term. I have never heard of this related to divorce. But I think you have a good case in defending this. Seeing as you have been seperated for so long how could it be conceivable that you should have to sell a joint asset and handover a 50% share in the residual equity? Also you had to deal with all that debt of your departing spouse. I would robustly defend this and threaten the press if its inforced. You should be ok. But I think you may have to pay something. C
