Hi

I separated from my husband six months ago. For a long time I have had to put up with excessive drinking where at times he became physically and mentally abusive. He also self harmed himself under the influence of drink. On top of this he began gambling and he has accrued considerable debt.
Finally I discovered he was having an affair with another woman so left the family home to live with her. Since then that relationship has finished. He is refusing to deal with any of his debt, correspondence, will not inform anyone of his whereabouts, so you can imagine the amount of phone calls I have had to deal with. We have got behind on our mortgage payments and if we go any further behind the building society have threatened to reposses our home. Because he is self employed it is difficult to trace what money he has and also he has not paid his tax for last year either. He has dumped his van on my driveway, its not taxed and he has cancelled the insurance....what can I do

Get some financial advice asap from the Citizens Advice Bureau.

Make sure you separate any bank accounts - do you have a joint account?

Hi

We have one joint account which is overdrawn rather considerably, so I have had to agree a figure with the bank each month to try and repay it back. I have opened an account in my name which they can not touch. I have also put our joint account in dispute (which the bank told me to do). I cannot get my name off the account without my husbands signature. I went to a debt advisory service and they have drawn up a plan for me, but at the moment I pay out more than what comes in, so hence I am living on my overdraft. We have a mortgage of £1200 a month before anything else goes out, and he is refusing to deal with any of his debts. Sorry to go on and thanks for your help.
