Just wanted to say thank you very much for your replies. Sorry for the delay - more dramas. What I'm learning is that the all the drama is legally irrelevant. I'm trying to save the money the children will need, without getting wiped out myself. Sounds like the law is still a blunt instrument serving the needs of lawyers better than families, defying all best intentions to reform it. I'll go on the financial forums - many thanks for your help and good luck.

Less travelled - i wish I had found this site several months ago - it would have saved me £8k. In fact I could probably have done better on my own - not that my solictors were all bad - but they are running a business. The advise from what I have seen is better than what I have recieved - but if you want to get best value it is key to remain objective.
For £8k all I got was no result - I ended up leaving the FMH home with the police because the sols were so desparate to see both sides of the story objectively they did not appreciate how bad it was for the kids or me.
My stbx is one of those who wants to fight to the bitter end - and the £8k was largely spent trying to avoid a trial or three - I am £8k out of pocket and still face three trials.
Am thinking about self repping and using baristers at court (stbx solicitor is old school).
Take the advice here - but if you get nowhere after a couple of months - put it into the court timetable as soon as possible.

Best of luck
L
