Hi'y'all

After 13 years with my OH and 11 years of marriage, I told him yesterday that I wanted to end it. Obviously I'd been thinking about this for a long time, whereas for him it appears to have come as a complete shock. There's no hope of salvage, I moved on mentally a long while back and have now found a new partner.

I guess there's lots to sort out, finances, mortgage, possession of our pet cats - I'm hoping the site will help with that.

We've lived in Scotland for a number of years, but I will be returning to England. Looking at a few sites, it seems that - if we can agree the finances - it'll be easier and cheaper for my Ex to divorce me in Scotland, than it would be for me to petition in England (one year vs. two year separation, much lower costs). Does anybody have any knowledge of this?

Hi there

Firstly in England, you dont have to do a separation - you can do unreasonable behaviour.

Secondly, never mind the divorce, you mind should be on the finances. I only know about English law in this regard, and my understanding is that settlements can be less generous in Scotland. Ask both an English lawyer and a Scottish one to give you a pen picture of what you would be looking at before you make a decision.
