It is the norm for a surviving married spouse to be awarded 50% of an army pension.
But should the pensioner be already divorced from his spouse who if anyone
would qualify? Could I nominate my son? Will the army pension die with the pensioner?

You'd need to check with the pension scheme.

Some allow a survivors pension to be paid to a partner others only if you are married.
Some pay an allowance to children until they are a specific age but I doubt they would allow you to nominate your son to receive a pension for life simply due to the potential cost.
